YEAR 2 BROADCAST JOURNALISM | STAN ARMIT
Portfolio
In my second year, I would especially like to develop my skills and knowledge of understanding algorithms of different media sites such as Instagram, TikTok and twitter. This is because I would like to be a social media advertiser for big accounts in the sports industry, including editing video content and making photo content for their pages. Another skill I would like to develop is my knowledge of is editing using adobe premiere pro to edit high-quality industry standard videos, this is because I would like to become an editor in my future and using college’s high quality equipment, it just make sense to use it to my advantage. Something I would like to learn in year 2 is presenting confidently, this is because in my first year I was still quite timid in front of the camera. I can achieve this by being on camera more and it will easily become second nature for me.
What do you hope to learn within year 2 and how will you develop your skills and knowledge?

After college I want to go university where I will study sports journalism, I would like to get a freelancing work experience at a sports broadcasting company such as BT Sports, Sky Sports or BT Sports, or even a smaller local sports broadcasting place. After university I would like to carry on my venture at a big sports broadcasting company full-time as an editor/presenter. I would then like to be a freelancing editor or presenter for any broadcasting company so I can work for whoever needs me and I am not tied down to one job, I would like to have freedom.
Strategies to Enter Industry.
My strategies to enter the industry are to first leave college with a good grade, then go to university. The course I will study at Leeds Beckett University is Sports Journalism. This is because I have a heavy interest in sport and my dream job is to be a football journalist/reporter. After this, my plan is to get a job as a runner on Sky or BT sports, and then project my knowledge onto some of the higher ups as an effort to try and impress them. This will hopefully lead me to a situation where they consider hiring me as a journalist or reporter.
Short, Medium and Long term goals
A short term goal of mine is to pass my college course with a Merit, I will achieve this by working hard for my FEP to get everything done. A medium term goal of mine would be to get into and finish my university course at a high standard, this is so I can get my dream job. I will do this by consistently working hard throughout my university course. A long term goal of mine would be to gain my dream job of being a reporter/journalist I will achieve this by working hard to achieve my dream.

(Written, Documenter, Presenter)
I would describe myself as a good multi-media journalist. My strengths include, video editing, presenting and giving information. An example of when i edited a product is for my first year FMP, which was a football tv show. An area for development is writing skills, as I would to develop my vocabulary and learn new words to use for articles.
Someone who influences my journalistic style would be Jimmy Bullard, because he has fun while presenting and is interactive with crowds, which makes people love him. Jimmy presents SoccerAM and is an ex professional footballer which helped him get to this position. This is similar to me because I am interested in sports and having fun on camera.
My areas of interest are Sports and fashion, they interest me because i grew up around it and my family are all big football lovers. This has rubbed off on me since I was young meaning I've grown into a massive football fanatic, thishas led me to want to specialise in sports journalism.
My ambitions are that I would like to work for a well-known European broadcasting sports company such as sky sports on BT sports. This is because I have a deep love for football and would love to present and report for it.
Evaluation
My task is to discuss and evaluate two different broadcast journalism showreels, picking what I do and do not like about each of them and using this to create my very own showreel and for it to be as great as possible. I am evaluating Chris Baker’s ‘Presenter journalism showreel’, this is because I am going to do a presenter journalism showreel too, so it is perfect to take inspiration from because Chris is good at what he does. This showreel is just over two minutes long which I think is the perfect amount of time to show your skills, without it getting boring. His showreel is packed full with different things he is proud of achieving, such as news broadcasts, News call outs and radio work. I like the style he went with, he made every different segment clear so I knew what I was watching. He is a good and convincing presenter. Something I would change is maybe add some background music, so it isn’t dull at all and adds personality to the showreel. From this showreel, I will take the labels used by Chris to demonstrate what he is doing, I think this gives an easy way for the viewer to tell what you are doing and I will be implementing this into my work. Something I will not take from this is his editing style, quite frankly, I find it boring. I like upbeat edits with music, transitions etc…
The next showreel I will be evaluating is Olivia Davies’ ‘journalism showreel’. This is because she is a brilliant presenter and studied at the university I want to go to. This showreel is 2 and a half minutes which is also a great length showreel to get across her skills without it being boring like I said previously. Her showreel is filled with clips of her amazing work from interviewing to being in a news room. It is very fast paced, moving from something to something else very quickly, this is a negative thing sometimes though, as she hasn’t labelled what she’s doing so you have to find out yourself by watching. This is something Chris Baker did fantastically, as he made it clear what he was showing every time it changed to him doing something else. Something I will be taking from this is to include interviews as they give the showreel more personality and show what you are like when under pressure. Something I will not be taking from this showreel again is the editing. It is very dull with no music or transitions, and I believe it would be better if it wasn’t so grey.
The differences between the two are easy to tell, I think Chris has more editing experience therefore his edit is better. I think they are both extremely talented journalists in the same field. I do think however, that Chris’ interviews are better and look more professional compared to Olivia’s, even though Olivia has an interview with someone important. Another thing Chris has over Olivia is camera positioning and camera operation skills. We can see this during Chris’ interviews and some of his shots, like the one where he’s walking towards the camera is extremely well made and looks very professional.
